焼尻発電所の歴史　その2

現在、焼尻島の発電所は西浦豊崎地区にあり、北海道電力が管理しています。

しかし、初めて焼尻島に電気が灯った頃、発電所は会所前（東浜地区）の坂道の途中に建設されました。

ディーゼルエンジンを使った火力発電所で、少し上にあった湧水をせき止めて造られた池、通称「寺坂の池」から水を引き、エンジンの冷却水として利用していました。

そして、ここからが面白いところです。

エンジンを冷やした後の温排水は、隣接して建てられた島内唯一の銭湯へと引かれていました。

その銭湯の名前は、なんと「電気風呂」。

発電所から出る温排水を有効活用した、当時ならではの工夫です。

島民にとって「電気風呂」は、ただ体を温めるだけの場所ではありません。お風呂に入り、疲れを癒やし、顔なじみの人たちと語り合う、島民の憩いの場でもありました。

発電所は電気をつくるだけでなく、その熱まで利用して島の暮らしを支えていたのです。

今では、電気もお風呂も当たり前のようにありますが、当時の島の人々は、限られた資源を上手に活用しながら、暮らしを少しでも便利で豊かなものにしようと工夫していました。

発電所の隣に銭湯があり、その名前が「電気風呂」。

そんな話を聞くと、昔の焼尻島の暮らしが、少し身近に感じられませんか。

The History of the Yagishiri Power Station — Part 2

Today, the power station on Yagishiri Island is located in the Toyosaki area of Nishiura and is managed by Hokkaido Electric Power.

However, when electricity first came to the island, the power station was built halfway up the slope in the Kaishomae area, in Higashihama.

It was a thermal power station that used a diesel engine to generate electricity. Water was drawn from a pond known as Terasaka Pond, which had been formed by damming a spring a little farther up the slope. This water was used to cool the engine.

After cooling the engine, the warmed water was piped to the island’s only public bathhouse, which stood next to the power station.

The bathhouse was called Denki-buro, meaning “Electric Bath.”

It became a popular gathering place where island residents could relax, warm themselves, and enjoy a little time together.

In this way, the power station did more than simply provide electricity. The waste heat from its engine was put to good use, helping to create a special place for the island community.

It is a charming example of how, in those days, the people of Yagishiri made the most of the resources they had and found practical ways to improve their daily lives.
